How to design an engagement ring with AI that a jeweler can actually make

Use AI to find the look, then turn the picture into numbers a jeweler can build from. Put the stone's size in millimeters in your prompt (a 1 carat round is 6.5 mm across), along with the prong count, setting height, a band of 1.8 to 2.2 mm, and the metal. Check every image for floating stones and prongs that miss the stone, then bring the jeweler your favorite design in several views with the written spec. They will rebuild it in CAD, and a custom ring at Brilliant Earth takes 4 to 6 weeks start to finish.

Where AI helps and where it stops

AI image tools are quick at showing you an east-west oval, or yellow gold against a hidden halo, before anyone spends an hour at a bench. Customizing is now normal: in coverage of The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study, 88% of couples married in 2025 edited their engagement ring or had one custom designed.

The tools don't check physics. "Just because AI can draw something doesn't mean we can actually make it," Chris Uptain of Christopher Fine Diamonds in Arizona told Rock n Roll Bride in October 2026. The jeweler Poggenpoel says AI regularly places diamonds where there isn't enough metal to hold them. Treat the image as a picture of what you want, and give it a spec that keeps it close to something real.

Step 1: write the spec before you prompt

Decide these in plain words first. The list becomes your prompt, and later it becomes the brief you hand the jeweler.

Decision Put this in the prompt What jewelers build
Stone shape and size "round diamond, 6.5 mm across" Use millimeters from the table in step 2
Direction "oval set east-west" North-south runs along the finger; east-west runs across it
Prongs "four claw prongs" Most rounds use four or six, depending on stone size. Pear, marquise, princess and heart shapes usually get V-prongs to guard the points
Setting height "low profile" or "high cathedral setting" Low is 6 mm tall or less, high is 7 mm or more. Low snags less; high lets a straight wedding band sit flush
Band width "2 mm band, even width all the way around" Fogal and Barnes gives minimums of 1.6 mm for a solitaire, 1.8 mm for pave or cathedral, and suggests 2 mm or more under a stone of 1 carat or larger
Metal "14k yellow gold" GIA rates 14k, 18k and platinum all fine for daily wear. 14k needs little to no upkeep; platinum is expensive to resize
Wedding band "room for a straight wedding band to sit flush" Stops the AI from drawing a setting that blocks a band

Step 2: turn the carat look into millimeters

Image models draw what looks right, so "1 carat" in a prompt can come back as almost any size. Mew Design, which makes an AI ring generator, says its carat sizes are visual guidance only. Give millimeters instead. These are typical well-cut stones from DiamDB, measured against Angara's 17.3 mm inside diameter for a US size 7:

Look Round Oval (1.5 ratio) Round across a size 7 finger Round vs a 2 mm band
1 carat 6.5 mm 8.12 x 5.41 mm 38% 3.3 times as wide
1.5 carats 7.44 mm 9.29 x 6.19 mm 43% 3.7 times as wide
2 carats 8.19 mm 10.23 x 6.82 mm 47% 4.1 times as wide

The last column is a quick test for any top view: a 1 carat round should look a bit more than three times as wide as a 2 mm band. A stone covering more than half the finger is past 2 carats. Check that against your budget: the average engagement ring in 2025 cost $4,600, and Rock n Roll Bride warns that an AI stone can be so large it would cost £100,000 on its own.

For how the shape changes the look at the same weight, see our oval vs round comparison.

Step 3: prompts that produce a buildable picture

Put every spec into the prompt and ask for more than one view of the same ring. Say what not to draw, too. Paste them into a general image tool such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Midjourney, and swap in your own numbers.

A classic solitaire

Photorealistic studio photo of one engagement ring. Round brilliant diamond, 6.5 mm across, held by four claw prongs that clearly grip the edge of the stone. Low profile setting. Plain 14k yellow gold band, 2 mm wide and the same width all the way around. Show the same ring from the top, the side, and at a three-quarter angle. Light gray background. No floating stones, no extra prongs, no text.

An east-west oval with a hidden halo

Photorealistic photo of an engagement ring. Oval diamond, 8.1 x 5.4 mm, set east-west across the finger with four double claw prongs. A hidden halo of small round diamonds sits under the oval and shows only from the side. Platinum band, 2 mm wide, with small pave diamonds across the top half only. High setting with room for a straight wedding band to sit flush underneath. Top view and side view of the same ring.

A pear on the hand

Close-up photo of a hand wearing an engagement ring. Pear diamond, 9 x 6 mm, pointing toward the fingertip. A V-shaped prong covers the point and four claw prongs hold the rounded end. Plain 18k rose gold band, 1.8 mm wide. Natural daylight. The prongs touch the stone in every view, and the band stays round.

Then refine in small steps:

  • Change one thing per message and name what stays: "Keep this exact ring. Change only the metal to platinum."
  • Ask for the side view every time. It shows the setting height and whether the prongs reach the stone.
  • Save the prompt next to the image. The words carry the measurements.
  • Stop at one favorite in several views. One clear direction is easier to quote than twenty variations.

Step 4: check the image for the usual AI mistakes

Zoom in on every view before you show anyone. These are the errors jewelers keep flagging, and what each one means in metal.

What you see What it means for the real ring
Prongs that stop short of the stone, melt into it, or change count between views A prong that misses the stone holds nothing. Velur's checklist asks whether the prongs touch the stone and stay the same number in every view
A stone hovering over the band with nothing under it Rock n Roll Bride names a diamond with nothing holding it in place as a typical AI flaw. Ask the jeweler how they would hold it
A band that thins, kinks or narrows at the back AI bands often look thinner than a durable ring needs. Hold it to the widths in step 1
Lacy filigree, hairline milgrain, tiny engraving Metal is removed as a ring is finished, so fine detail gets finer and can be lost
Pave running into a prong, or a halo passing through the band Two details that look separate can occupy the same physical space
A stone much bigger than the size you asked for Measure it against the band with the table in step 2
No room for a wedding band A low setting often needs a curved or custom band. Decide now, or ask for a higher setting

A jeweler can fix most of these in CAD. Ask which details they changed and why.

Step 5: hand it to a jeweler

Poggenpoel asks clients to bring their AI images because they show what the client is drawn to. Take these to the first meeting:

  • Your favorite design from the top, the side and a three-quarter angle. Taylor & Hart's CAD designers lay out each ring on a four-view specification sheet, so extra angles save questions.
  • The written spec from step 1, in millimeters.
  • The ring size. GIA tells custom buyers to know it before meeting a designer.
  • The stone plan: the grading report if you already have the stone, or the shape, size in mm, natural or lab-grown, and a budget.
  • A line on what's fixed and what's flexible, such as "the east-west oval is the point; the pave is optional."
  • How the ring will be worn: hands-on work, gym, gloves.

If you designed in DreamRing, its ring brief is a summary of your design to take to the jeweler, and the app can check Google Maps and reviews for jewelers near you who can make it.

What the jeweler does next, and how long it takes

The jeweler rebuilds your image as a CAD model and shows you renders before any metal is cast. At Taylor & Hart that design stage usually takes 2 to 5 days with three amendments included, and a printed resin model you can try on adds five working days. Expect the CAD to look a little sturdier than your AI picture.

Check the CAD against your spec number by number: band width, setting height, prong count, stone size. Changes at this stage mean editing a file. After casting they mean new metal.

Source Timeline Price, as of October 2026
GIA At least 2 weeks for a simple design; 5 to 6 weeks or longer for complex work or matched stones Not given
Brilliant Earth 4 to 6 weeks from first consultation, with a CAD model to approve Fully custom from $2,000
Taylor & Hart 2 to 5 days of design, then as little as 3 weeks to make Not given (three CAD amendments included)
Element 79 6 to 8 weeks on average in 2026; start 8 to 10 weeks before the proposal Not given
SuperJeweler 5 to 8 weeks for CAD-based rings CAD fee often $50 to $150, often credited; most custom rings $2,500 to $8,000

By Element 79's rule, a December 25 proposal means starting by about October 30.

Any local jeweler who works in CAD can quote from your spec, and two quotes beat one. Online, Taylor & Hart and Brilliant Earth both run custom design services. To buy the center stone yourself, search by shape and carat on Rare Carat, and ask the jeweler first whether they will set a stone you bring in.

Questions

Can a jeweler make a ring from an AI image?

Yes, as a starting point. The jeweler rebuilds the image as a CAD model and fixes anything that could not be cast or worn, such as prongs that miss the stone or a band that is too thin.

What should I put in an AI engagement ring prompt?

The stone shape and its size in millimeters, which way it points, the prong count, setting height, band width, metal, and the views you want. Then list what to avoid, such as floating stones and extra prongs.

How wide should an engagement ring band be?

Fogal and Barnes suggests 1.8 to 2.2 mm for most designs and 2 mm or more under a center stone of 1 carat or larger. Its minimums are 1.6 mm for a solitaire and 1.8 mm for pave or cathedral settings.

How long does a custom engagement ring take to make?

Usually 4 to 8 weeks. Brilliant Earth quotes 4 to 6 weeks for custom pieces, Element 79 puts the 2026 average at 6 to 8 weeks, and GIA says even a simple design takes at least two weeks.

How much does it cost to turn an AI ring design into a real ring?

SuperJeweler says CAD fees are often $50 to $150 and often credited to the order, and puts most custom rings at $2,500 to $8,000. Brilliant Earth's fully custom designs start at $2,000 as of October 2026.
